The world has accelerated the transformation process to achieve carbon neutrality goals. The Green Deal announced by the European Union in 2019 was a turning point that deeply affected not only the environment but also the economic order. It is aimed to reduce carbon emissions by 30% by 2030 and to make the continent completely carbon neutral by 2050.
This transformation is not limited to Europe. China, Japan, India, Australia and even the United States have also announced net zero emissions targets between 2050 and 2065. What about Türkiye?
Türkiye's Carbon Emissions Commitment
In a declaration submitted to the United Nations in 2016, Turkey pledged to reduce carbon emissions by 21% by 2030 compared to 1990. It also set a carbon neutrality target for 2050. However, in order to achieve these targets, the private sector, especially the industry, needs to enter a strong preparation process.
Carbon Tax Coming From European Union
The European Union has not only set targets. As of 2026, a carbon tax (CBAM - Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism) will be implemented on imports from countries outside the EU. This means a serious cost and competition problem for industrial companies producing for foreign markets like Türkiye.
The Rules of the Game Are Changing
Companies with low net emissions will earn carbon credits, while companies with high emissions will have to purchase these credits. In this new system, not only production but also environmental sustainability will become a competitive factor.

If We Don't Prepare Now, It May Be Late Later
There is only a few days left until 2026. This is not a warning for the business world, but a call to action. For Turkish industry, carbon neutrality targets are not a burden, but a fundamental condition for survival in the future.
